Full-size trucks have become extremely popular with consumers. According to a new report from the Highway Loss Data Institute, they’re just as popular with thieves.

In fact, the top five vehicles with the highest insurance claim frequency for theft are all full-size trucks. The “winner” (on a list where you don’t want to be #1) is the four-wheel-drive Ford F-250 crew cab. The high rate for trucks can also be explained by equipment being stolen. For example, thefts of full-size truck tailgates is on the rise. Experienced thieves can remove these quickly and sell them to “chop shops.”

The good news? Theft rates overall are declining. Ignition immobilizers, which help prevent vehicles from being hot-wired, were standard in 89 percent of 2012 models sold.
