Everyone loves a good scary movie around Halloween. If you’re headed to the theaters this weekend, Paranormal Activity 2 and Saw 3D will make you hold that popcorn a little tighter. Prefer to lock yourself in the house while watching a scary movie? Then put the kids to bed, turn off the lights, and have your own Halloween film festival.
I’ve put together 10 of my favorites, although it wasn’t easy to stop at 10. I’ll let you add to the list in the comments.
- Saw
- Halloween
- The Shining
- The Exorcist
- Poltergeist
- The Evil Dead
- A Nightmare on Elm Street
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
- The Silence of the Lambs
- Night of the Living Dead

The original Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock and the original Halloween by John Carpenter are the best.
The Haunting by Robert Wise is the scariest movie and perfect for Halloween.

Prefer the fantasy variety rather than gruesome and gory, real life, shock dramas like Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Silence of The Lambs. And how about “Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein” for Halloween fun that the younger kids can enjoy too!
Every year since he was a babe we’d watch “The Nightmare Before Christmas” on Halloween. We still do have it on as we dole out candy & yuck it up with neighbors. But, our new favorite (only augmented by the new prequel of the same name) is “The Thing“. Great scary flick. The first horror movie he watched, though, is called The Descent. I recommend.
Whoops! I meant, since my son was a babe. Sorry.
It has to be The Rocky Horror Picture Show for Halloween…

Dear Sir,Please find enclosed a monk’s habit. The long robe will cover your weodon leg and, with your bald head, you will really look the part.Very truly yours,Acme Costume Co.Now the man is really upset since they have gone from emphasizing his weodon leg to emphasizing his bald head so again he writes the company another nasty letter of complaint. The next day he gets a small parcel and a note, which reads:Dear Sir,Please find enclosed a bottle of molasses and a bag of crushed nuts. Pour the molasses over your bald head, pat on crushed nuts, stick your weodon leg up your butt and go as a caramel apple.Very truly yours,Acme Costume Co. ]]>
