Why reward achievement?

I am a member of GEICO’s college recruiting team, and our Achievement Award program is without a doubt one of my favorite initiatives. For more than 20 years, we’ve offered these awards to undergraduates in recognition of academic excellence and demonstration of a true commitment to campus and community.

To apply, students must be sophomores or juniors majoring in business, math or computer science, and must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Sounds easy, right? There’s more. Our selection committee also requires each applicant to submit a resume and transcript, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, and an essay describing why they deserve the $1,000 award. 

Each year, we receive hundreds of applications from inspirational students all over the country. This year, I personally had the privilege of reading essays from student organization presidents, people working while attending school, community volunteers, resident advisors, students with double majors and 4.0 GPAs … and in some cases, applicants who are all of the above!  

So, why reward achievement? At GEICO, we know it takes hard work and dedication to achieve outstanding results. These qualities also help people build rewarding careers, businesses succeed and communities thrive. Therefore, it’s with much excitement that we announce the 83 undergrads selected as 2010 GEICO Achievement Award recipients! Our team also put together a short video commemorating this year’s awardees.

    This is a great program! I wish there were tuition reimbursement for graduate business studies for supervisors :)
